8th grade: Hip Hop Dance!

Hip Hop dance was a success! We learned a few dances, practiced and performed for each other. We took our time learning the steps, practicing, and gaining confidence exercising in a different way. Thank you to Ms. Maile for coming and sharing her expertise with us!

6th grade: Pickleball!

We had a wonderful Pickleball unit! It was fun to learn the basic rules (even that it is named after the inventors dog who was named "Pickles") as well as fun games such as River, Queen of the Court, and doubles. We had a fun time learning and playing Pickleball!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

We had a great day in both grades participating in our Annual Halloween Fun Run! We followed directions running around the track, up the bleachers, performing sit ups and push ups...and had fun with our classmates at the same time! I love Halloween as it "kicks off" the holiday season and am looking forward to fun times ahead! *We were SO LUCKY to have two of our classroom teachers come and participate in our Halloween Run...THANK YOU Ms. Eisold and Mr. Koshiba - the girls loved it and commented on how "fit they are"! Great role models and so fun to have them visit! Happy Halloween!

8th grade: Football wrapping up!

The 8th grade girls have completed their flag football unit. We learned the football skills, played small games, played "4 downs", did football stations, and played a "real" football game! We ended the unit with a fun game of Capture the Critter! UP NEXT: HIP HOP DANCE AND WEIGHT ROOM!

6th grade: Football a success!!

They did it! The girls learned positions, plays, strategies, and football terms...all enough to be able to play Football! It was great to see them running plays and playing the game of football. Great job girls! UP NEXT: PICKLEBALL AND FLOOR HOCKEY!

6th grade; Zumba ends and Football begins!

We ended our Zumba unit with performances of the various routines. The girls did a great job and even volunteered to perform when they didn't have to - it was a fun celebration of Zumba! I am so proud of all the girls for taking risks, giving their best effort, and having fun - every day!

Next unit: Football, please remember your complete uniforms, sun protection, and wonderful attitudes!

We culminated our swim unit with a genuine, real swim meet! It was great fun with Heat sheets, events, swim caps, etc..the girls did a great job in the swim meet and I saw improvement in their technique, strokes, and endurance.

8th grade Parent Night Follow up!

Here are a few reminders to help you get the school year off to a great start!

Locker items: Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Sunscreen, personal items

Uniform: Required.. both the top and bottom - everyday, with your name on it. Also, athletic shoes and socks (hair up recommended)

Sun Safety: please remember your sunscreen and/or hat on your PE days - well, everyday would be great too!

Day of PE: A good breakfast, plenty of water and a great attitude! :)


THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOUR DAUGHTER IN PE

-Your daughter has PE on A, C, and E days
-Encourage her to wear her uniform to PE class daily
-Purchase cross training or running shoes for PE
-Encourage Sunscreen and a Hat
-Provide a good breakfast
-Send a note or email for illness or injuries
-Take an interest in what is happening in class
-Encourage Physical Activity at home

8th grade - SWIMMING!

We swam a 12 min cardiovascular swim today! The girls are doing a great job working on their stroke technique, endurance, and efficiency in the water. We are spending a lot of time on technique, tips, and even practicing swim survival strokes, and when to use them. We have 3 more days and then we will switch to Football!





6th grade Zumba ....going well!

We are progressing well in our Zumba unit...The girls have learned 4 dances so far and will learn one more. Then, we will review and celebrate the end of the unit dancing all of the zumba routines in one day! Great fun!

Welcome to the 2012-2013 School Year!

Here we go! We have started our new school year and are busy establishing our classroom expectations, getting to know each other, and figuring out our new routines. We have played a few games and have more to come...Beginning around 9/12 (exact dates to come) we will start our first units of the year:

6th grade: Zumba
8th grade: Swimming

End of 2011-2012 School Year - HAPPY SUMMER!

Well we wrapped up the end of the year with many fun games and activities. The 7th grade girls played "indoor games" and competed in volleyball, indoor kickball, dodgeball, pedometers, and of course, a scavenger hunt. The 8th grade girls ended the year with a basketball unit and a bit of fun games as well. Both grades had a great time walking to Yogurtland for an end of the year treat! It has been another wonderful, rewarding year in Punahou PE. I personally thank each and every one of my students for always being respectful, kind, and energetic during class - you make my job so fun and easy with your positive, super attitudes! To the 8th graders: enjoy your next chapter in life - the Academy...make good choices and remember to keep exercising!! Aloha and Happy Summer! See ya next year! - Mrs. Coolen

7th grade - Synchronized Swimming!

Finally, the moment you have all been waiting for..the Synchronized Swimming Routines! We spent a good amount of time teaching the various skills, then we formed groups and worked and worked on our routines until they were well polished! The unit is a great example of collaboration, project-based learning and takes team work, organization, time management skills, and patience! The final products are great, the girls worked hard and (one of the best years ever as far as collaboration and time management goes) here are their results! Enjoy! *They are sorted by class "color" -if you don't want to watch them all, ask your daughter what color class she is in...enjoy!

8th Grade - Water Polo

We had an outstanding Water Polo unit! The girls learned many new skills, dribbling with the ball, shooting, passing, etc. We spent a few days on skills and swimming technique and then played Water Polo games. We ended the unit with relays, swimming for fitness, and inner tube water polo! Here are some photos and a short video! Enjoy!

Hi Girls!
This is speaking in spanish - but it gives you a good idea of the SYNCHRONIZED part..perhaps you can get a few ideas for your routines..no one expects this level of performance from you - just for ideas! Enjoy!!

8th grade - Ultimate Frisbee

We are in game play in our Ultimate Frisbee unit. The days have been hot and still, very good frisbee weather! We are playing a mini tournament and running for cardiovascular fitness on F days! The girls are really "getting" this game and understanding that it is a great way to get exercise and a fun way to work in some "running". Next, we will play Speedball for a couple of days, and then "socci" - after that we go to the pool for Water Polo!

7th Grade - Synchronized Swimming continues..

We are continuing with our swimming technique! We have learned and reviewed the following strokes:
Freestyle
Breast stroke
Back stroke

We have learned proper arm technique, kicking technique, breathing, and tips to be more efficient in the water. We are also working on endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

Now for the synchro part:
We have just started learning some basic stunts. We have introduced the "arms", ballet leg, collapsing clam, tub, and head up swimming to get in to new formations. The girls are doing great!!

Happy New Year - 2012!

Back to school! We are wrapping up our units, playing fun games such as capture the critter, and fitness testing. Next week we will run a mile test, play more games, and have a few Health Lessons...After that, it is the start of the 2nd semester and....

7th grade will start with SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING! AND

8th grade will do ULTIMATE FRISBEE & GAMES/ WATER POLO!

Christmas Scavenger Hunt!

In honor of the holidays, we participated in a Christmas Digital Camera Scavenger Hunt. Everyone divides into groups and heads off across campus taking pictures with or at items on the list..for example, "take a picture with a Christmas tree"...It is a race and the students return to class with pictures, the list crossed off, and happy faces! Great fun!
